Martha Werler is Professor and Chair of Epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health and Senior Epidemiologist at the Slone Epidemiology Center. She is Director of the BU Reproductive, Perinatal, and Pediatric Epidemiology pre-doctoral training program. Most of her research is centered on congenital malformations. She has conducted numerous case-control studies looking for risk factors associated with specific structural defects and at present is following a cohort of children born with craniofacial anomalies to assess neurobehavioral outcomes. Current projects include identification of infectious risk factors for gastroschisis and behavioral risk factors for so-called ‘folate-resistant’ spina bifida. She teaches a course on the design and conduct of case-control studies.
